AI WEIWEI EXHIBITION BREAKS BOUNDARIES AT THE GARDINER MUSEUM

From a distance, the six blue porcelain vases stacked one on top of the other resemble ancient Chinese porcelain from centuries past.

Upon closer inspection, the illustrations on the vases tell a contemporary story about war, environmental disasters, oppressive governments, and human migration.

The tower of blue porcelain called Vases with Refugee Motif as a Pillar (2017) is one of the many artworks on show at the Gardiner Museum’s exhibition, Ai Weiwei: Unbroken running until June 9.

Sequoia Miller, the Chief Curator at the Gardiner Museum, said the piece is one of his favourites in the exhibition and is key to presenting Ai’s full history with ceramics.

Mikael Cantave: Canadian soccer expat making his own way

The path to becoming a professional soccer player is difficult for all that attempt to travel it. Mikael “Miki” Cantave, born in Ottawa, knows all about those challenges.

Cantave, 22, made a move to Europe from Canada to start that difficult journey at the age of 12, and now plies his trade in Spain for CD Tropezon and Haiti’s men’s national team.

Zuckerberg Fails to Attend Big Data Hearing

The International Grand Committee on Big Data, Privacy and Democracy convened for the second straight day in Ottawa this morning.

It was decided that Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and COO Sheryl Sandberg will be served a formal summons the next time either step foot on Canadian soil, as voted by the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics.

Zuckerberg and Sandberg shirked their subpoenaed responsibility to attend the committee hearings taking place this week and will be held in contempt of Parliament if they ignore their summons, despite the presence of Facebook representatives at the gathering … (Read More)

Canada wins bid to co-host 2026 World Cup but work still to be done on and off the field

Canada, in a joint bid with the United States and Mexico, has won its bid to co-host the FIFA World Cup in 2026. This is great news for Canadian soccer and a great opportunity to grow the sport in the country.

Ottawa, however, will not be among the final sixteen host cities;Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton are the only Canadian cities still eligible out of a possible twenty-three to be selected.
